Between late January and the middle of March the whole migration stands still on the volcanic short grass south of the Serengeti, and roughly half a million calves are born — eight thousand a day at the peak, most of them inside a two-week window. A wildebeest calf is on its feet in six minutes because it has to be, and everything with claws for sixty kilometres has come to Ndutu for the same fortnight.

This is the densest predator viewing in East Africa and the least crowded season to see it. We give you five nights inside the calving grounds rather than the usual two, because the point of this trip is to be there when something happens, not to drive past on the way somewhere else.

Every night is offered at two levels. Adventure is comfortable, mobile and close to the ground; Comfort is a permanent lodge with a pool and a wine list.

Day01

Arrival into Arusha

We meet you at the aircraft door at Kilimanjaro International and drive forty minutes into the coffee outside Arusha. Sleep, eat, and at six your guide lays the eight days out on the table with a map and a straight answer about what February usually does. Green season means afternoon rain and it means the plains are the colour they are on the postcards.

Day02

Tarangire in the green

Two hours south-west with breakfast in a box. Tarangire in February is the opposite of the Tarangire in the brochures — the elephant have spread out into the wider ecosystem and the park has gone properly green, which makes it one of the best birding fortnights of the year anywhere in Tanzania. Migrant rollers, storks and raptors are all in, and the baobabs are in leaf.

Day03

Ngorongoro, rim to floor

Up the Rift wall to the rim, then straight down the Seneto road while the crater floor is still under cloud. Twenty-five thousand large animals live inside these walls year round and February adds standing water to the soda lake, which brings the flamingo back in numbers. Out through the Lerai forest in the afternoon and west across the conservation area as the light goes long.

Day04

Down onto the short grass

The drive west out of the highlands drops you onto the Salei plains and then onto grass so short and so mineral-rich that you can see forty kilometres in any direction. This is why the herd calves here and nowhere else: volcanic ash from Ol Doinyo Lengai puts calcium into the grass, and a cow feeding a newborn needs it. You will smell the herd before you reach it.

Day05

A full day in the calving grounds

Out before six with everything for the day in the vehicle, because we will not come back for lunch. Births happen in the first hours of light and they are quick — a calf is standing in six minutes and running with the herd inside half an hour. What follows is the reason every cheetah, hyena and lioness in the ecosystem is standing within sight of you. We stay out until the light is gone.

Day06

Lake Ndutu and the marsh

A change of ground without a change of camp. The acacia woodland along Lake Ndutu and the Big and Little Marshes hold the resident lion prides, and this is the most reliable stretch in the whole ecosystem for finding leopard and for lion asleep in the branches. Afternoons in February often come with a storm on the horizon and an hour of the best light of the year underneath it.

Day07

North to the Kusini kopjes

An hour and a half north into Kusini, where granite kopjes break out of the plain and the grass runs long between them. Cheetah use the rocks as lookout posts and hunt the open ground in full daylight, which makes this the best chance on the itinerary of watching a hunt start to finish. Day08

Ndutu airstrip, and home

A last drive on the way to the strip, which on these plains is a strip of mown grass with a windsock and nothing else. The light aircraft is ninety minutes to Arusha, or straight through to Zanzibar if you are adding the coast. Day rooms and a shower in Arusha before the evening flights, and your guide stays with you until you are checked in.

A 20% deposit holds your dates and camps. The balance is due 60 days before you fly, and is fully refundable until then.

Around half a million calves are born on these plains inside three weeks, and the whole trip is built around that fortnight.
Cheetah
Acinonyx jubatus
Ndutu and Kusini hold the highest cheetah density in East Africa. They hunt in daylight and the grass is short enough to watch it happen.
Spotted hyena
Crocuta crocuta
Calving season is their season. Clans of thirty and more work the herd margins from before dawn.
African lion
Panthera leo
The Marsh and Masek prides are resident and unbothered by vehicles, and February gives them the easiest hunting of the year.
Golden jackal
Canis aureus
Pairs work the afterbirth and the stragglers, and they are far bolder in calving season than at any other time.
Black rhino
Diceros bicornis
Perhaps thirty animals on the crater floor, protected around the clock. Day 3 is your one real chance at them.
Lesser flamingo
Phoeniconaias minor
Standing water on Lake Ndutu and the crater soda lake brings them back in thousands through the green months.
Kori bustard
Ardeotis kori
The heaviest bird still capable of flight, and it displays on these short-grass plains in exactly this season.
